Apple Hill String Quartet Pop-Up Concert on Thursday, 4/18/24 at 10 a.m.

At 10 a.m. on Thursday, April 18th the Apple Hill String Quartet will perform a pop-up concert at the Harrisville General Store. The program will feature Samuel Barber’s “String Quartet in B major, Op. 11” and “Impressions for String Quartet: Bright Palette” by Jennifer Higdon.

The Quartet is one of New Hampshire’s cultural gems, and has been called “dashing and extraordinary” by the Strad magazine. The Quartet serves as the Music Directors for Apple Hill’s Summer Chamber Music Workshop in Nelson, New Hampshire, cultivating connection and understanding among people of diverse backgrounds, cultures, playing levels, and ages through music performance and education centered around the values of acceptance, inclusivity, creative expression, and encouragement.

Wine Tasting with Northeast Wine Company on Friday, 5/10/24 from 4:00 to 5:30 p.m.

Stop in to taste and learn about an array of regional wines picked out for the store by Jamie and Sarah at Northeast Wine & Vitis Distribution. Light snacks will be provided by Laura Carden and our amazing store crew.

author Rebecca Kaiser Gibson in conversation with poet Tin Fogdall on Wednesday, 5/15/24 at 6:30 p.m.

Join writer Rebecca Kaiser Gibson from 6:30-8:30 p.m. on Wednesday, May 15 for a reading from her novel, The Promise of a Normal Life. Hailed as “radiant and transporting,” the book is narrated by a fiercely observant Jewish-American girl who seems to exist in a private and separate realm. Her journey to womanhood takes the reader on a riveting series of experiences across the landscape of the 1960s. Rebecca is the founder of The Loom, a popular poetry series in Harrisville. Her most recent book of poetry is Girl as Birch.

Rebecca will be joined in conversation with fellow poet and friend, Tin Fogdall. Tin has been a New Hampshire Arts Council Poetry Fellow and a finalist for the National Poetry Series. Her poems appear most recently in SWWIMThe Missouri ReviewPoetry Northwest, and many other venues.

All are welcome at no charge. Books, beer, wine, and snacks will be available for purchase.

Our New Tiny Store Series

Historic Harrisville's Tiny Store Series features authors, talks, and music in the cozy and comfortable environment of the Harrisville General Store. Writer Sy Montgomery and artist Matt Patterson kicked off the series with a reading from their books Of Time and Turtles and The Book of Turtles. Other guests have included writers Tory McCagg, Rebecca Dinerstein Knight, Julie Buntin, Mimi Bull, and Susie Spikol, as well as the Apple Hill String Quartet and speaker and mediator Adar Cohen.

Michelle Aldredge

Michelle is a graphic designer who runs Gwarlingo Studio, located in the Sorting and Picker House in Harrisville. She is also a writer, and the founder of the online arts blog Gwarlingo. In 1999 she traded the sprawl and traffic of Atlanta, Georgia, for a rural life in New Hampshire, where she cared for injured hawks, owls, and eagles at a raptor rehab center and assisted artists at MacDowell, the nation’s oldest artist retreat. Currently she and her business partner, Corwin Levi, help individuals and businesses with branding, print, and web design from Gwarlingo Studio. A love of old photos, books. ephemera, architecture, history, as well as a passion for sustaining quality of life and affordable housing motivated her to join the HHI board. She currently serves as Vice Chair and the Chair of the Communications Committee, and assists HHI with its archive, website, and newsletters.
