Conservation

Historic Harrisville is dedicated to protecting critical land parcels in and around Harrisville by means of establishing conservation easements or outright purchase.

Mosquitobush

In 2004, Historic Harrisville purchased the land and former mill sites that comprised the tiny industrial village known as Mosquitobush, where waterpower turned the machinery for small woodworking mills until the late 1930s. This acquisition is approximately seven acres of firm land lying on both sides of the river that connects the Upper or Great Meadows to the Lower Meadows between Lake Nubanusit and Harrisville Pond. Besides its potential archaeological resources at Mosquitobush, the Great Meadows is a wildlife habitat for otter, moose, weasels, birds, amphibians, and reptiles. A conservation easement is held by the Harris Center for Conservation Education.

Bollerud Easement

In 1987, Historic Harrisville established its first conservation easement, 82 acres of hillside land above the village that offers a grand view of Mount Monadnock.

Johnson Field

This triangular field, located at the eastern entrance to the mill village, has been owned and protected from development by HHI since 1988. In 2010, a community garden was established where 30 plots are under cultivation by individuals.
